Job description

£22,302 per annum

Six days per week, Term time plus set up and close down of House

To start September 2019

Oundle School is one of Britain’s leading co-educational boarding and day schools, situated in the charming market town of Oundle, Northamptonshire. Oundle School has long been associated with the very best of modern independent education, especially boarding education. The individual child is central to our vision.

The House system is at the heart of life at Oundle. It is in the community of the House that most pupils find the confidence and sense of purpose that lead to fulfilment in the larger community of the School. The Houses are scattered throughout the town, and each retain their own individuality, whether fashioned by the Housemaster or Housemistress, its pupils, its architecture or location, whilst adhering to the philosophy of the School.

The senior boarding Houses accommodate approximately 60 pupils, or roughly twelve pupils in each year group. The accommodation varies between Houses, with some pupils in shared bedsits in their first year; whereas others may share small dormitories and work in separate studies. All Sixth Formers are in bedsits, and all Upper Sixth formers are in single bedsits. Each boarding House has common recreation areas, a library, TV room, and kitchens for pupil use. In addition, all Houses have their own dining room where the members of the House sit down together for breakfast, lunch and supper.

Working under the direction of the Housemaster/Mistress, the primary role of the Residential House Matron is to supervise and provide care for the pupils, with particular responsibilities for the physical, social and emotional wellbeing and presentation of the pupils in the House. This includes conducting daily surgeries, providing care and supervision of unwell pupils, liaising with parents/guardians/staff/medical staff in respect of the wellbeing of the pupils, and being responsible for the smart appearance of the pupils. Residential House Matrons contribute further to life in the House by involvement in House social functions, helping to arrange and participate in trips and events, and supporting pupils in their everyday activities where possible.

The working pattern for Matrons is currently under review, however at a minimum Residential House Matrons will have one 24-hour period off per week in Term time. Self-contained accommodation will be available throughout the year. All meals are provided on duty days. Residential House Matrons are contracted to work for 35 weeks of each academic year, made up of Term time (33 weeks) and then time for ensuring the House is prepared and ready to receive pupils at the beginning of each Term plus any special activities, such as planned training.

Applicants must have experience of caring for children and young adults, good levels of literacy and numeracy, and a friendly, approachable attitude. A current, full UK driving licence is essential, as is use of a car. Applicants must have, or be prepared to obtain, a First Aid Certificate.
