Gentleman’s Assistant (Live out)

A skilled, experienced and intuitive Gentleman’s Assistant (GA) is required in the Barnet area to provide professional assistance to an extremely intelligent, kind, adventurous and hilarious 26-year-old (Joseph) who has cerebral palsy. The role will be largely based in his home (live out) but will also include trips around London and on occasion, with the possibility of short day or overnight trips around the UK. There is potential for the GA to provide support to the client when attending professional or social events and rehabilitation appointments.

This is an amazing opportunity for someone who is interested in a unique and rewarding enabler role where direct care is combined with administrative/office tasks as well as cooking and driving.

After the completion of a successful paid trial period, there is an opportunity to complete up to 42.5 hours per week in this role.

There is the possibility that additional week and weekend hours will be required.

There is also an opportunity for development and increased responsibility going forward, if the right candidate is found and demonstrates a high level of performance.

Previous experience providing direct care, limited to shaving, dressing (occasionally) and help with putting on orthotics would be highly advantageous. You will also need to be a confident swimmer to be able to support Joseph when he goes to his hydrotherapy session on a biweekly basis. Experience and confidence in cooking and in driving both within and outside of Central London is essential. 

Previous experience in administrative/office tasks in a fun, fast-paced and challenging environment is desirable.

Candidates must have excellent communication and organisational skills and be flexible, confident and extremely intuitive. They must also have the ability to work with Microsoft operating systems, Microsoft Office and preferably Excel. The candidate should be open and willing to learning new skills to support Joseph to live his best life. You must be able to work confidently by yourself as well as to play an important role in a diverse, yet close, team.

Ideally, candidates will have been educated to degree level, but this is not essential. Experience or knowledge in any of the following areas would be desirable: Social Work, Architecture, Rehabilitation/Case Management, Psychology, Business or Accounting. 

It is desirable for the candidate to be confident in various types of business and professional situations as well as having the ability to blend into a fun and young domestic lifestyle.

A clean driving licence is essential, as the Gentleman’s Assistant will be required to drive Joseph in his own vehicle.  

Non-smokers only.  

You will require an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS). The job is dependent on suitable references. Training by an entire team of experts will be provided and regular supervision will be undertaken.

Initially, you will be working with Joseph’s experienced Personal Assistant as well as his current team in order to learn how to best support him in living his best life. The role is diverse and there will be development opportunities in many different areas.

Your daily tasks will include, but will not be limited to, the following:

  • Basic admin tasks (filing, scanning, file management, shopping orders)
  • Organising and implementing data recording (i.e. Google forms)
  • Driving
  • Tidying and cleaning rooms (e.g. mopping the floor)
  • Light food preparation (e.g. snack)
  • Cooking, including meal preparation
  • Ironing
  • Making beds
  • Unpacking shopping and restocking cupboards
  • Attending medical appointments
  • Attending MDT appointments
  • Direct care and support ‘personal care’ limited to shaving, occasional assistance with clothing and providing daily assistance with orthotics.
  • Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy exercises

Development opportunities are available in the following tasks:

  • Supporting Joseph with managing an organisation which is akin to a micro business 
  • Assisting Joseph when returning to employment
  • Forever home support/planning
  • Administration for the MDT (e.g. booking rooms, minute-taking)
  • Assisting with future recruitment
  • High-level analysis, project work and research
